Bailiffs by Daumier
Honoré Victorin Daumier, was born on 26 February 1808 in Marseille and died on 10 February 1879 in Valmondois.
This engraver, cartoonist, painter and sculptor commented by his work, the social and political life in France at the xixe century. A prolific cartoonist, author of more than four thousand lithographs, he is best known for his caricatures of politicians and his satires of the behaviour of his compatriots. He changed our perception of the art of political cartooning.
Among his favourite subjects are the people of Justice. And among these are the bailiffs, a profession he knows well from having been hired as a bailiff's clerk in 1816. He likes to punish well, and the caricature of his bailiffs is fierce.
